Shama Winston-Ford - M.S., LPC, NCC

Shama was born and raised on the small Caribbean island of Dominica in the Caribbean and immigrated to the United States at the age of 14. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Charleston University and later obtained her master’s degree in clinical counseling from Charleston Southern University. Currently, Shama is a third-year doctoral student at Regent University pursuing her PhD in Counseling Education and Supervision.

 

With several years of experience in the field, Shama is dedicated to her professional growth. Outside of her work, she facilitates self-care groups for clinicians in training and psychologists in Ukraine and mentors counseling graduate students in social justice initiatives. As the proud owner of Disruptive Thinking Counseling, she offers a range of comprehensive counseling services for individuals, couples, and groups. Her approach is compassionate and client-centered, specializing in supporting a variety of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. She provides innovative therapy options such as walk-and-talk sessions, beach therapy, and both virtual and in-person consultations. Her training includes art therapy, play therapy, EMDR, Trauma Focused cognitive behavioral therapy, Gottman Level 1 & 2 couples therapy, along with Christian counseling.

 

In addition to individual and couples counseling, Shama is passionate about the transformative power of group therapy. She facilitates supportive and empowering group sessions that address shared concerns, promoting a sense of community and connection. These sessions offer a unique opportunity for individuals to draw strength and perspective from shared experiences, fostering belonging and understanding.

 

She committed to ongoing professional development, continually staying updated on the latest research and therapeutic techniques to ensure her clients receive effective, evidence-based care. She is deeply invested in the well-being of those she works with and takes pride in supporting them on their journeys toward mental and emotional wellness. Shama strives to create a collaborative, non-judgmental therapeutic environment where individuals, couples, and groups can explore, grow, and thrive. She believes that it is an honor to be part of her clients’ transformative journeys, and she is dedicated to providing the highest standard of care to support their mental health and personal development. Shama is married and has two sons. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality moments with her family and exploring new restaurants.

Blending evidence-based techniques with the calming rhythm of the ocean. The natural setting helps reduce stress, quiet the mind, and create space for reflection. Walking the shoreline, listening to the waves, and guided mindfulness in nature support emotional healing and renewed balance.
